     Lydia este copilul favorit al lui Marilyn si al lui James Lee; o fata care a mostenit ochii albastri luminosi ai mamei si parul negru intunecat al tatalui. Parintii ei sunt hotarati ca Lydia sa realizeze visurile pe care ei nu au putut sa si le implineasca – Marilyn isi doreste ca fiica ei sa devina medic; James vrea ca Lydia sa fie populara la scoala, o fata cu o viata sociala bogata. Cand trupul neinsufletit al Lydiei este gasit in lacul din localitate, James este consumat de vinovatie si porneste pe un drum nesabuit care i-ar putea distruge casnicia. Marilyn, devastata si razbunatoare, este hotarata sa faca pe cineva raspunzator, cu orice pret. Fratele mai mare al Lydiei, Nathan, este convins ca Jack, baiatul rau din vecini, este implicat intr-un fel. Insa cea mai tanara membra a familiei – Hannah – este cea care observa mult mai mult decat poate vedea oricine si ar putea fi singura care stie ce s-a intamplat cu adevarat.
